Smittys is good place not great. I enjoy the atmosphere and decor laced with Military history. The food is good nothing to write home about and the prices are affordable. Truly in the central P.C. area its the second best BBQ behind Seabreeze. We take a big group almost once every two weeks to Smittys from TAFB so its worth the trip
I have lived here over 23 years, and have eatten at Smitty's since we found it, while entertaining friends. Great atmosphere! As for what one person wrote about bad service, food and such, I have to agree that when they do run out of something, they will only mention it, if they are completely out of it. Once, our child's chicken tender was frozen in the inside, still after being fried. They explained that they were out and pulled some out of the freezer and figured the fryer would unthaw it while cooking it. This was one owner ago. The owners now, seem to care more about profits, than the customers. The original owner, I must say, was the best. As for my personal visits in the past year, nothing has been terribly wrong and the waitresses, although may be in the back talking to much about personal problems, they come through eventually. But every resturant these days are having alot of trouble with people taking pride in their work and wanting more money for less work. It can't be helped, work ethics are no longer taught in school or in their homes by their parents, so you get what we sow. As for the food, it's good, as for the waitressing staff, good. As for the cooks, they vary. The new owner is is ok. Loud when having conversations with his friends and staff, but ok. All in all, the atmosphere is good. One suggestion, clean everything better, the planes have a ton of dust and dirt, the air condition units in the ceiling are really moldy looking and dirty and no matter how dark you make the place, you can still notice it. But this type of things is common with older resturants in Panama City that don't renovate. Even Pineapple Willy's has it, they try and cover it all up, but with the high humidity here, your going to get mold from the air conditioning. With the expense of running resturants, the owners always have to find newer ways of dealing with unwanted expenses and that is what leads to unhappy customers. The main reason I keep coming back is that my husband loves the sauces and the sliced meat. So every now and then, I will follow him, cause he hates eatting alone. But I too, have found the ribs over cooked, the chicken undercooked and dry. Their sliced meats seem to be the only thing I eat anymore. I will also say that if you go during the day for lunch, that is the better time to eat. The service is the best, the salad bar is really fresh and good and the people are more friendly. Night staff, food and service really needs to be re-trained. But for being an older establishment, with a great reputation, great atmosphere in design and good food, I will give it a higher amount of stars than just one or two. But for all who read this, all the older resturants, especially the ones on the beach, have the same mold, dirt and dust problems that Smitty's has, it's because of the weather and high humidity we have here. These resturants would have to completely close for a couple of days to completely clean the systems out and replace things that are to old, in order to be up to newer resturants standards these days. And the cost is way to great for the older resturants. People need to understand, that eatting out at resturants, these days, you take the risk of anything happening, it is more to being safe than employees just washing their hands. Also, the container asking for money for someone, really needs to be updated. Didn't this person pass away recently?
Don't waste your money! I have eaten there for a few years and the place has gone down hill! I HAVE NEVER complained about the food or service! NEVER until tonight. The chicken was dry, the baked potato cold and the sausage was the size of an employee's finger. Please keep in mind I have never complained about anything until to night. Our waitress was not to be found so a very nice lady named R told us the cook said that was all the sausage they had thawed out so that was why our portion was so small. Instead of asking us if we wanted to sub for something else they just sent it out to see if we would notice. They brought 3 ribs laying upside down out to replace the sausage. Flipped the ribs over and they were burnt. Our actual waitress came by and all I asked for was for the BURNT ribs to be replaced. She came back 10 minutes later and said the manager took 40% off the ticket. We only ask for replacement of the burnt food. Monday is kids eat free night. They charged us for our girl's meal. We asked if they sing Happy B-day because it was our two girls B-day. They said yes. They brought cake and sang. Then on our bill charged us $3.50 for the slice of cake. The Manager told me and my wife that the ribs were not burnt and he has had problems with me in the past complaining and would not take the kids meal off. EVEN though it was MONDAY KIDS EAT FREE NIGHT! Once again I had never complained about anything at Smitty's. Nor have I ever seen that Manager before tonight. Needless to say as we were getting in the car to go the waitress ran out side wanting a tip!!!!! Telling us she didn't work for free!!! I told her to go back in because she wasn't getting anymore money from us. GO TO SONNY'S!!!!

Sorry to hear that your experience was so bad, but I have to say, as someone who eats there twice a month, your story of bad service and unacceptable food sounds far-fetched. Even if it is true, every place of business will have at least one day in their operating history when they are having an "off" day. Give them a break and another chance.
