I hear alot of bad rumors about this place so I was actually afraid to go. But I went and had a great time.
The drinks were great priced and the bartenders were awesome. I think his name was Brandon. I sat at the bar and he kept refilling my drink, no charge.
My friend didn't like her drink so he took time out to fix it the way she liked even though they were slammed busy.
Drinks are cheap and strong. A great place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd give this place five stars if it weren't for the fact that the place is filled with 'Bikers' whose names aren't "Stab-Wound", "Road Rash", or "Chopper Chuck", instead their names tend to be Arty Lipshitsch, CPA or Bob Fornier M.D. and drive Valkyries instead of Indians or Harleys. Don't mess with them though, they'll audit your ass come tax season!
Despite some of the patrons Newbys is a place Bukowski would've loved. Theres something for everyone who goes to bars to just drink and have fun. You can talk to locals and tourists alike, play whatever you want on the jukebox, darts are pretty solid and you can go inside and watch a game or out to the porch area and listen to live music or just relax if there isn't any. Theres no view of the beach whatsoever but if you like talking shop with gearheads about the bikes parked out front they're actually pretty open minded and willing to talk your ear off. Thats something I did back in the day when I was bored.
Do yourself a favor and buy everyone a round if you're in good fortune. I've done that twice and good things happened both times I did it. No kidding I bought everyone a round and the guy next to me said he'd let me share a cab with him and his girl (for free) and you'll always start up a conversation with people and I danced there for the first time in my life after that. Fun time had by all.
Newbys is the only place thats constant in PCB. They haven't changed much and the prices are reasonable for the beach. Don't expect too many people to be under thirty there either. You'll get the occaisional spring breaker or college kid drinking Pabst in a can for $1 more than just getting a cheap Miller or a jack & coke. By and large the crowd is made up of working class joe's and their working class girlfriends/wives.
For the ladies, do yourself a favor and try the Hunch Punch. Its sweet and if you're looking to drink a lot for cheap just order a jugs worth and sit back and enjoy.
For the guys, Newbys staff are excellent in the art of mixology. They mix your drinks as strong as you want them and know a good variety of drinks. The place is a packing store so go no further than having one of the best drink selections on the beach.
If you're in the military make sure to flash your ID and you usually get a round on the house (depending on how many times you've been there) and in general if you're nice to the bartenders they'll repay in kind. Ms Newbys is where I've had more drinks on the house than any other place I can recall (by far). Another great thing about the staff is that the bartenders don't actively ignore people and usually get you a drink in a timely fashion. Bartenders there have double teamed at times when they're 3 deep at the bar and can mix or pour and serve your a drink in under thirty seconds. Did I mention they're the most reasonably priced place on the beach?
By and large this is a place you can forget your worries and leave happy, thats whats kept me going there for years.
