wow, this place has a pretty good bagel.
coffee was good too.
A good place to stop on your bike ride for breakfast.
Got Aloha?: My wife, who doesn't love coffee as much as I, recalled a neat little coffee joint she used to hit during her days at PJC. We go to a number of coffee/bagel joints around town, but I never had a reason to do this one. During the quiet holiday period (and in the mood for a book and some different joe) I decided to step into Bad Ass.
While the decor is a little quirky; Jimmy Buffett's reversion to college age, the ambience says 'laid back.' One corner has a large screen television and video game hookup, a number of comfortable couches and tables that cries out for laziness. Further out from the corner, the place slowly begins to transform into an island-style motif, with a surfboard as table and bamboo all over.
The staff are your garden variety blue-state denizens, which of course does not bother me in the slightest. They know and love their coffee. In fact, the proprietor and I discussed the merits of whole bean coffee and how to best enjoy my newly-acquired Cuisinart coffeemaker.
Bad Ass can and will make any kind of foo-foo coffee drink that you can get at 'Fourbucks', but I find their plain or flavored coffee, unadorned, is an experience worth avoiding those big coffee retailers. They also have a sandwich/breakfast menu that may not completely rock your world but will give you a decent companion to enjoy along with the java.
The clientele appears mostly to come from the nearby PJC campus, but is not necessarily a deterrent from going in to enjoy some of the best unknown coffee in Pensacola. You can even get your own 'Got Aloha?' and 'Got Java?' bumper stickers, t-shirts that will make your neighbors think twice, and magnets to balance out that right-leaning refrigerator of yours.
Now, if only they could get a 'real' bookstore attached to it, rather than the college-text emporium.
Highly recommended.
