My gf and I went to Sawamura for our first date, we are both very familiar with Japanese steakhouses. We were seated immediately, and sat with one other couple waiting for our chef. He arrived promptly, and the show began. He was very friendly and explained as he cooked. Portions were generous, and the bill was under 40 dollars for the two of us, excluding tip. Not a bad deal at all, considering we had beer ( me) and sake ( her), soup, salad, and steak, chicken and scallops. I plan to take her there again, as the entire experience, from being served, to being cooked for, to being brought the bill and walked out was pleasant.

This past weekend my family and I recently celebrated a second B'Day party for one of my sisters. The meals and the atmosphere were fine. There was a party of 10 of us and each of us paid for our own meals separtely except for the birthday person. When we received our individual tickets, each ticket was charged an 18% gratity charge. We questioned the manager and was informed we were paying for our meals separtely. However, the manager said because there were 7 or more of us, a standard 18% gratis charge was "added for the table." I didn't see where this charge was indicated on the menu; if it were I would not have concerns about it. However, I am bother about this charge especially at the bottom of each ticket was a printed message that indicated "gratity not included." I believe when a service is performed gratis should be given. I thought the standard gratis on most meals is 10%. However, when the gratis is added into my regular bill, especially when the printed message indicated it wasn't seems to be a breach in billing tactics. If I wish to pay additional gratis on any meal, I should have that choice or if there is a standard resturant policy, there should have be visible print on the menu. Adding additional gratis to my bill did not set well with me.

10% is actually not at all a great tip. It is considered to be the bare minimum. If you have great service (regardless of how poor the food is) a decent tip is 20%. The gratuity is added to large parties at almost any restaurant even if the parties pay separately. At japanese steak houses the server splits the tips with the table chef. If you tipped only 10% then the chef and the server would have 5% each. $2 each for a $40 check is hardly a reason to go to work. The optional extra tip line is reserved for those patrons who generally tip generously over 20% if they enjoyed there meal. Don't take it personal, it is just providing an option to those who would like to tip more and don't carry cash.
