I volunteered here for almost 3 months and in that short time I saw a lot of things I didn't want to see. There was no physical abuse, but definitely emotional. There was no sense of respect for the elderly residents from the staff. If they soiled themselves or something equally private, it became public knowledge to all the other residents and staff.

I remember a woman who was clearly embarrassed that she had soiled herself that she pretended that she had sat on a wet bench. The staff person proceeded to verbally and loudly correct her and inform her (and everyone else) that she had soiled herself. After this staff person helped her to change out if it, she proceeded to carry the extremely soiled diaper from the bathroom to the back of the facility with one hand plugging her nose as she described the stench.

My duty as a volunteer was to do activities with the residents. I bought arts and craft supplies, movies, and games, not to mention what I later found out was already ready there at my disposal. My first week and 1/2 I sat around with the residents who just sat and watched television... all day, on one channel if you let them. Once I began to attempt an activity schedule with the residents I was met with strong resentment from the staff who had been there for 2+ years. If I tried to put in a movie the residents had agreed on by majority vote, i was told they can't watch movies until a certain time (after soap opera's go off). If I tried to play games I was told they can't play games until this or that. Even something simple like playing music while the residents ate lunch and dinner could be a struggle. It was like pulling teeth, and I was just doing it for the residents, yet the staff seemed to think it was all about them.

I'll just say this. If you're looking for a place for your love one where they will receive minimal to basic care i.e. 3 square meals plus snacks, medical/dietary restrictions followed, no bed sores (everyone has to get out of bed at least 3 times a day for meals) and no physical abuse (that I witnessed), & around 2-3 special activities/guests a month, then this is a nice place for you. If you want a place where your loved one can live out the rest of their years in peace, with dignity, and some happiness, then I'd decide on somewhere else.

As I was told, there are worse places than Rose Manor. But wherever you choose your loved one to be placed do extensive interviewing of the staff who will be in charge of caring for them, visit them as much as you can and communicate with them regularly. Not only will your loved one appreciate it, no matter their condition, but the staff will most likely give them more respect and better care.
