Full Sail blows academia out of the water!

i went to an elite university, apparently one of the nation's best, to study math + computer science before going to Full Sail. although i had no problem doing my coursework or getting good grades in academia, i was very disappointed with the quality and relevance of my traditional education. many of my courses in academia were taught by professors who had no connection to the real world, barely spoke english, and had poor presentation skills. sure, they were brilliant researchers, but that does not mean that they are effective teachers or that their knowledge is useful to people who want to go into the real world. in the end, i came out learning a lot about data structures and algorithms, and solved a lot of interesting brain teasers, but was not ready for the real world, with respect to both programming skills and business / professionalism skills.

full sail fixed all that. as a teammate of mine once put it, full sail is boot camp for your mind. at full sail, i was blown away at the quality and usefulness of their classes. in a nutshell, everything you learn at full sail is hands on and prepares you for the real world in one way or another. there are many, many things i learned at full sail that you do not learn in academia - making windows applications, using 3rd party libraries, VERY in-depth C and C++ knowledge, handling graphics, sounds, and user input, writing technical documentation, how to manage a team and give effective group presentations, how to network at conferences, tips and techniques for job application, etc, etc. but most of all, i got high quality classes from people with real world knowledge and strong presentation skills, and assignments that were both useful and interesting.

before you run out and sign up, though, i have two disclaimers. first, i was in the game design and development program. if you are looking at another program, your experience may vary. in general, i learned that you should never base your decision on the quality of the SCHOOL you are applying to, but of the specific DEPARTMENT you want to be in. Also, it is true that you get out of the program what you put into it. My class had some kids who thought video games were kinda cool, a former CEO who started his own company, wrote a book, and created a successful web site, and all sorts of people in between. The way Full Sail manages such a mix of students is by relying heavily on independent projects or group projects where you choose your role, so everyone comes out with an education that is tailored to their interests and abilities. So, you will need an independent mind, motivation, and talent to make the most of this system.

If you are the kind of person who has faith in old guys in suits making decisions for you, go for a more normal program. but if you are bursting with independence and creativity and know how to use them, Full Sail is a great place to be.

I have actually had a great time at Fullsail University and I can't even begin to explain the wealth of knowledge that was presented to me while attending this school. The Comments below me are mainly from students who are simply just not good at what they do.

At Fullsail you get what you put into it. Clearly the people below me just don't have the passion to succeed, they expect Fullsail to do all of the work for them, little do they know this is not how the industry works, you have to live and breath design and technology, and that is exactly what I did at Fullsail University, now I am a successful graduate working for a web development industry. People need to stop blaming the school for there problems, in this industry its all about how good you are, if your not good you wont get a job, its that simple. My only compliant about the school is that they need to raise the requirements to get in, so people who do lack the passion can work with others that are like minded.

In brief, I learned a ton and I am looking forward to going back to audit some classes in the future (You can take any class for free once you graduate, it must be in your program however)

If you want an education stay away from this school. They spend more time painting the walls every month to get new students than they do teaching. I spent two years there. They were totally useless when it came to job placement help. If you wanted to know why you got questions wrong on a test they would not tell you. Advisors were totally useless. Just for the record my grade average was 98.2 and I had perfect attendance. The icing on the cake was in a business class we took. I went and got real numbers from a real business. They did not want real numbers, they wanted me to guess. You would be better off taking your 130,000 dollars and investing in something else. They did not deliver on half of what they promised when we signed up
