New Year's 07: We just returned home from our recent trip and just wanted to suggest this great place to anyone who may visit. Great food, (wings) service and the refreshments of course.
A touch of the Irish..and more!: One of the finest Irish pubs on either side of the pond. Finnegan's features an excellent variety of British and European beers, ales, and stouts on tap, and as the sign above the bar proclaims - Purveyors of fine whiskey.
The food can by no means be described as "pub grub". Although pub favorites like shepard pie and bangers and mash are available, the menu is extensive with outstanding steaks and specials to tempt the gourmet.
Finegan's features live Irish music and if you are in Key West on St. Paddy's Day, Finnegan's Wake is the place to be.
authentic food and atmosphere: The first time I walked through the doors of Finnegan's Wake I thought I had stepped through a transporter and left Key West for the fair isle of Eirenn. There are old beer signs that hang on the walls, dim lighting is made to look like antique gas fixtures, plenty dark wood panels the walls and, in my opinion, they offer the best selection of beer you can find in Key West. The food is always lipsmacking- I recommend colcannon (mashed potatoes with cabbage and sharp cheddar on top), shephard's pie, galway mussels (served in a bread bowl with a white wine sauce), and the cheddar plate (completed with a ramekin of hot guinness mustard mmmmm!). The potato and leek soup is, by far, the best I've had outside my own kitchen *wink*. I'm running from memory here, but their ale selection includes expected favorites like Guinness, Newcastle and Bass and the less findable treats such as Strongbow Cider, Boddington's, Tetley' and Stella Artois. Try the Black Velvet, in which I believe it is Guinness and Strongbow they mix (if not, it's still good!). In all, I highly recommend. Authentic, tasty, you'll want to sit their for hours enjoying all the pub/restaurant has to offer!
**Interesting note -- Finnegan's Wake is a popular Irish song, the wake being the service held at the death of a loved one where all friends and family came together to eat, drink, and talk about the times**
