For the only GLBT synagogue in South FL I expected better. I recently attended services here for almost 3 months and could not get inspired to become a member. First, the group is mostly senior citizens. You can count on one hand the number of people here under the age of 65. Although the congregation is about to celebrate their 35th anniversary, they are experiencing serious cash flow problems. There is even a proposal to merge with a local Reform congregation. Little wonder, the group makes absolutely no effort to bring in a younger following. It is a close knit group of very old members who make no effort to welcome newcomers. Not a very friendly group from my experience. I felt like I was walking into a convalescent home listening to a group of grumpy old people complaining about their bodily ailments. However, the services are creative and the younger rabbi is a breath of fresh air. But there is no dynamic energy here among this group. I know a number of younger GLBT Jews in the area who choose to attend more traditional temples over this one. Just a warning--if you are under 65 and especially if you are single, you will not be made to feel welcome here.
