We've been to Splash a few times. The first couple of times, we really enjoyed our service and our food. Since then, it hasn't been so good. They do too much to the food. If you have fresh fish and tasty meat, don't drown it in a sauce that will completely overpower it, with such strong flavors. That seems to be what they've been doing lately. I'm not sure if we'll go back or not. For the price, we can eat tastier food elsewhere.
I first dined at Splash on August 25, 2006. If I had rated it back THEN I would have given it 5 stars for food, ambience and service. What a difference three years makes. I recently took a friend there on Saturday, January 31, 2009. The food and service were HORRIBLE. The dishes we ordered were practically inedible. I asked for tartar sauce, which I thought might add some flavor, and the waiter told me he could not find it so he had to "whip some up" himself. What he brought me was a bowl of mayonnaise and some unknown substance in it. It was truly disgusting.
While we waited for our "meals,â we spent most of our time swatting away the numerous flies that were buzzing around our table and the restaurant. The family of three sitting next to us also had flies buzzing around their food. It was a cool January evening....why were there so many flies!?!
I was truly embarrassed that I brought my out-of-town friend there and gave it such a rave review based on my 2006 experience. I do not know what has happened in the past few years, but it sure has taken a turn for the worse. It is unfortunate that a Northeast Tampa gem has lost all of its charm and glitter. I guess we will have to wait for a new one to take its place.
Definitely North Tampa's little secret. Amazing seafood, decent pricing, excellent service, laid-back upscale atmosphere. The owner even comes around inbetween entertaining customers at the bar to ask you how your meal is. How many times has that happened to you at Outback or TGI Friday's?
