| About: | Owner David Laxer carries on the tradition of excellence begun by his father Bern, more than 40 years ago. Beef connoisseurs should make this restaurant first on their list of culinary stops. Known for its large selection of melt-in-your mouth aged beef, it is easy to see why it has won a wall full of awards. The "putting on the ritz" crowd have some 25 types of caviar to ponder and a wine cellar that pushed one half million bottles. |

After hearing so much about this restaurant, I must say that I was disappointed to say the least. I had a 8oz filet, medium warm. The server suggested to butterfly the filet so that it was not dry, w/butter. The filet was overcooked, tough, dry, and well done along the sides. You do not get a choice of sides, but for an UPCHARGE you can order a different side item. The veggie that came with the dinner was Kale, who eats Kale at an upscale restaurant? The crab soup, had no crab, the asparagus had a spicy hot flavor that was not a good combo, and the shredded carrots, tasted like uncooked shredded carrots.
I could have passed on the tour of the kitchen, health issue for sure, and the tour of the moldy smell of the wine cellar. They moved our belongings upstairs to the desert restaurant to have desert and coffee, interesting for sure, but I would rather have sat at my dinner table to continue my meal. My desert cake was dry, and tasteless.
If I had to compare Bern's to Ruth's Chris, Ruth's Chris was a perfection from the service, food, desert, and overall attractiveness!!!
I will never suggest Bern's and for sure, never return!
Probably the best steak I've ever eaten. I had the 8oz fillet, rare with a warm center. It was like butter. Our waiter was top notch, easy to question and very full of suggestions and information. The french onion soup was also the best I've ever had.
The tour of the kitchens and the wine cellar were interesting, especially the cellar.
After dinner we went to the dessert room, it was amazing. They have these weird wooden pod-things where your party is seated.. so you can chat, sip dessert wine or coffee and eat without feeling like you're in a crowded restaurant.
The only thing that bothered me about Bern's was the decor. I understand it's got a history, but I felt like I was in the Haunted Mansion or at Hogwarts. The front room feels like a brothel and the dining area we sat in wasn't much better. I feel like some areas could do with a little updating.
I have to admit I was disappointed with my recent visit to Bernâs Steak House. Having been in business for over thirty years my wife and I have eaten in a number of fine dining establishments. Not only in the Tampa Bay area but also in various locations throughout the United States.
Because my son and his wife were here for a visit I thought it would be nice to dine at Bernâs. I had read of Bernâs but up until last Monday never dined there. My perception of Bernâs was it would be a fine dining experience.
Perhaps I expected too much. We were first seated near a table of rather loud patrons. Because they were loud and disruptive I asked the waiter if we could move us to another area away from their disruption. He graciously obliged and seated us in another dining room. Unfortunately the noise level in this room was roughly the same as the previous.
Our food and the service were excellent. We had the chateaubriand, which was cooked to perfection. It seems a shame a fine restaurant such as Bernâs doesnât exercise better control over their patrons. In my opinion the loud and disruptive dining, not only in our dining area but, throughout the restaurant cheapens and degrades the dining experience.
I also noticed their stated âdress codeâ was not enforced. More than a few patrons were dressed in blue jeans and T-shirts. Several patrons were busy loudly talking into cell phoned. Not exactly what I expected.
Though I compliment Bernâs for their food and service I will not return. Fine dining simply doesnât include a bunch of loudmouths acting like spoiled brats.
