The food is excellent when the resteraunt is functioning properly. I 've found this to be a little more than half the time, although it has never stopped me from making a reservation. It's in a small renovated house and has a very unresteraunt-like atmosphere, jazz or blues music, and per the review below the hostess is young and may be showing some cleavage. All in all it is worth it's slight nuances.

The Sign of the Mermaid is my husband's and my favorite restaurant! We take all our friends there when we want a casual, beachy atmosphere and excellent food -- the Brie appetizer is incredible! The staff is friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. If you are looking for a stuffy place then don't go there. If you are looking for superb food, excellent service and a quiet good time then go. By the way -- it is a small place so make reservations well in advance.

Disappointing: Sign of the Mermaid was suggested to me several times from many locals. It was described as an upscale eatery on the island. However, I knew I was going to disappointed when I walked in the door. I was greeted by an unprofessional woman with inappropriate clothing. Secondly, the inside reminded me of a home filled with garage sale finds; the décor was baffling. Third, the wait staff seemed distressed and over-worked. The overall atmosphere was uncomfortable. Finally, while the pasta dishes were average, the steaks, which were more than thirty dollars, were tasteless and had to be sent back to the chef. Unbelievable for $32.00 steaks! As a local, this will a restaurant I will talk about, but not in a favorable light. Instead, I will be glad to tell of an over-rated eatery will bad taste in décor, staff, and service.
