What is there not to say about Abio's? This has been a family staple since a year before I was born. Abio's opened in 1979 and so did I, and I've been eating it ever since. This is not a cookie cutter pizza you can get just a grocery store or a "fast food" pizza place. This is a meal! My parents got me hooked on Al's pizza at a young age. Every Friday we got the same pizza that I still eat today. The good thing is I got my wife hooked on it too. Al and Dave are a great team. Now for 30 years though I will admit that even today I still crave that same pizza I always order. But I have had samples of friends' dishes and every dish is just an Absolute good. Once again this isn't a frozen, reconstituted, microwaved, piece of cardboard with sauce you get elsewhere for a couple of dollars cheaper. If you have any standards in getting a good pizza Abio's is the "Only" place to go!
We eat at Abios every week and have for over 17yrs. while the restaurant is what we will call seasoned (meaning not brand new) the food is great and the prices are also. While Al (the owner and cook) may look like Cuba's former President Castro, He not a communist, but he is a Seminole.
My wife and I had read good reviews calling it the best pizza in Ocala, so we decided to try the pizza on a recent shopping trip. To say that we were disappointed would be an understatement.
The restaurant was very dirty.
The salad bar looked unappetizing, to say the least.
The menu said that the pizza had lots of cheese, but ours appeared to be drowning in sauce. My wife got a calzone and was not impressed. I tried some and it had a funny taste.
If Abio's is truly the best pizza in Ocala, I feel sorry for the people of Ocala. While in Barnes & Noble, we asked an employee what was the best pizza in Ocala. He didn't mention Abio's, but did mention Cici's and Pizza Hut in the top three. Not a good sign.
