February 28, 2009 a business associate and I stopped for an evening meal at the Town Tavern. Local people mentioned it as the best place for "regular food." It is Boston South for Celebration Floridians.
Facing the lake at Celebration, the Tavern has an outdoor eating area featuring picnic benches that swing when pushed. The service was excellent and informative. One of the Tavern's catchy items is 99 bottles of beer on the wall. Plus an extensive wine list and coctails.
I'd eaten well all week, so heavy fare was not on my menu. I ordered onion rings, a veggy sandwich and finished with Boston Cream Pie.
It's too bad they fry onion rings in the same oil used for cod, scrod and other North Atlantic fishy delights. Otherwise I'd be shouting "Five Star Onion Rings!!!" The onions were thin sliced sweets, breaded in an excellent light batter, crispy and tasty. They had that fishy background taste making it hard for the batter and onion flavors to romp on my palate.
The sandwich, a new menu item, was OK, a salad bursting out of a hoagie roll, a little pepper jack and tomatoes for flavor. My side was Boston baked beans and I added a side of cole slaw. The beans and slaw were both fine. My dining companion had a Kelly Burger he said was excellent.
I know nothing about Boston Cream Pie, what's great, good or poor in a pie. It's a Boston dessert and I don't get to Boston much. A hard core Kelly's restaurant fan may hunt me down and make me take it back, but when tasted it didn't force my eyes closed and make sounds related to intimate encounters rush from my diaphragm and vocal cords. It was fine.
My meal cost about $21.00 with a non-alcoholic beer, coffee and tax added in.
The ambiance and setting are definitely five star. A little more care with the food and I'd rate the place higher. This is supposed to be a little bit of Boston in a mid to high end planned community. I expect a little more from a metropolitan area. The Town Tavern is regular food. But I didn't have any specialties.
Awesome place: This place is good whenever you go... Friday evening Kareoke, Saturday accustic guitar player, or any other night... there are plenty of tvs too, so if there are games on this is the place to go to see them... lots of locals go there, the staff remembers who you are and the drinks you want, but they are friendly to visitors too... it is a warm place. I often bring my friends there when visiting they visit the town.
Awesome Place: The atmosphere is awesome and the food is just as good. Great place for group functions as well. The owners are super nice and give one-on-one service and care to EVERY patron.
