| About: | Located downtown near the University of Alabama-Birmingham and its medical center, the Fish Market is the cheapest and possibly the best seafood restaurant in Birmingham. The owners are from Greece, so the self-service dining area is decorated with Greek photos and artwork. There is a small grocery area and, of course, a fish market. The food is fresh, and the portions are large. There is always a crowd because the value is unbeatable. The venue is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. |

I didn't go to the Fish market for Red Velvet cake or Cookies... I went for SEAFOOD! And unfortunately, all of the times I have been there it was less and less enjoyable. I love shrimp, and I have had theirs fried, boiled and seared. EVERY time I have had the fried shrimp, it STILL had some of the shell on it, way up on the eatin' end. Of course you don't find that out until after you got a mouthful of very "crunchy" shrimp. Makes for a bad experience once, and a terrible experience twice and more.
Every time I have gone, when I got to the bottom of the bowl, plate, etc, I would finally see that they were DIRTY!!! With baked on food still stuck to the bottoms of the bowl, you suddenly get a bad feeling starting in your stomach. And it's happened on more than one occasion too. Most of the plates, bowls, cups, glasses are either cracked, broken or chipped.
And the place stinks, literally. When you walk in the doors, the stink of fish is the first thing that greets you. Folks... good fish and clean fish restaurants don't stink, period.
The food is mediocre at best, most of it is seasoned the same and it all tastes the same too. The carrots taste like the potatoes and the potatoes taste like the other stuff you ordered.
I'm glad others have had good dining experiences here, but I have not, and I find everyone there from the order takers/cashiers to the bus boys to be slightly put out by the presence of customers. The bus boys stand and stare at you waiting for you to leave so they can clean your table the second you stand up.
Everytime I go to The Fish Market, I have to wait on parking, then cram my car in an undersized parking space, wait until at least the second bum has asked me for money BEFORE I get out of my car, fend off at least to more "bummings" before I get to the door, eat bad food, smell the stink, and then do the same "bum song and dance" back to my car. All with "SECURITY" sitting in the shade across the parking lot. There are better places to eat in this town than here.
One of my favorite places in Birmingham I suggest to anyone who asks. Great seafood, so fresh. the crawfish and Tuna rare was some of the best I've had (I'd skip the gumbo though). Great prices. Good beers. Sit at the bar and watch the big screen TVs. I always visit it when I'm in town.

as well, good family style my dad likes
me and my sister to take him there
at least once a week, thanks.
