after reading all these yahoo reviews i thought i should check this place out. unfortunately i made the mistake of driving around the back of the restaurant before i came in. the horrible stench wafting from behind the building almost turned my stomach. i tried to give ol heidelberg the benefit of the doubt and reasoned it could be old beans from the mexican place next door. so we went in and the horrible smell followed us in the dining room. sure, fried meat is the predominant odor inside, but the stench was still there under it all, and the closer you got to the kitchen the worse it got. the food was alright, the deserts were EXCELLENT, but, after talking to the waiter about it, we found out that they don't even make them, they buy them from a bakery. if i remembered the name of the bakery, i'd recommend going there. but NOT to ol heidelberg. we drove by the back of the building again when we left and caught a glimpse of the kitchen that was so horrifying we had to stop and ask the smoking employees how the kitchen managed to get in such horrible disrepair (grease caked on the ceiling, the walls, the lights.... so thick that the fluorescent bulbs took on a green/yellow tint, broken plumbing all over, filth as far as the eye can see) and the general consensus was that low pay and worker morale causes employees to work only as hard as they have to to earn a paycheck.

so... ol heidelburg has great service at slave wages and cooks fatty food in a disgusting kitchen. i have been there and pray for the sake of my sense of smell that i never have to go there again.

After reading the attempt at writing a review of the Ol' Heidelberg by peanut q, I was forced to respond in an attempt to correct this person’s ignorance. This was not a review; it was an attempt at bashing the restaurant. This review was instigated by a disgruntled ex-employee. Why would you drive down the narrow delivery area behind a restaurant? Are you a Dumpster Diver? I drove to the Ol’ Heidelberg on Sunday (11-1-2009). I drove around back and noticed two dumpsters next to each other. Duh! This may be the reason for a stinky situation. No employees were smoking at that time so I got out of my car and went to the open door. First I saw doors to rooms that appeared to be a dishwashing area but I could not see the kitchen nor the horrible condition the viewer described. If in fact the conditions that were described were true, then the Health Department would have closed the restaurant. I then went in the front door and the smell was wonderful. I think peanut q needs to see an ear, nose and throat doctor and soon. Possibly the odor is closer than you think. While you’re seeing the ENT doctor, see an optometrist at the same time. There are no male waiters, nor have there been for at least six months. You have a serious vision problem. As for salary I was a waitress when I attended college and the salary for servers is very low but they make up the difference in tips. I think they make something like $2.00 an hour now. I applaud the Ol’ Heidelberg staff for telling the customers the truth that the cakes are baked somewhere else. So many places say the cakes were baked in the house, they fail to tell you they came in frozen and they put them in the oven. No matter how you spin it, they are not being truthful. I understand the cakes are baked in Atlanta by a bakery chef that went to a culinary school in NY, a tad better than the frozen stuff you get in some other places. I also noticed that peanut q rated several other restaurants that day. Funny two were in Panama City. Peanut q must have been on a roll to attempt to write reviews, all posted on 10/6/09. You also contradicted yourself when you said the low pay is the reason for the low morale and indicating that they only work as hard as they have too to earn a pay check. Then your very next sentence you say great service. Your logic or lack thereof amazes me. Be careful, you may be up for a Darwin Award. After reading your trash and the other reviews on the same page, guess what? You lose.

I'm German. In America, it's as close as home you'll get. Saurbraten I don't have to make myself. I host corporate birthday parties there once a month. We never have a problem and their's usually 10 of us or more. They give free slices of cake on your birthday and they have a million desserts.

There's a guy who always takes care of us, and if you have a big group I'd ask for him. He's very polite and he know's his stuff. We always get him and he's never once messed our order up. If you have any questions about anything, just ask him.

Stay away from the specials if you want real German food. Some are authentic, some aren't. They have a decent selection of beer, but nothing like home. I love the Dinkel Acker they always have on draft. It's the only place I know you can get a liter.

Wernher Von Braun used to eat there, and from what I hear Konrad Dannenberg still eats there from time to time. Ol Heidelberg is definitely an oasis if you are German and live in America. All said, it's a nice place to relax and enjoy a meal with friends or coworkers.

I agree with CJ. I lived in the netherlands for three years, about five miles from Germany. We were in the country 4 or 5 times per week. I was in Germany four times last year and find this place very acceptacle. As for the person who said it's too expensive, you must have grown up eating at fast food places. You should stick to Mcdonalds a place more fitting one of your stature. Please, the next time you get a thought just let it go.
