We stayed in Dothan a couple weeks ago to attend our son's graduation from Warrant Officer SchooI at Ft Rucker and had seen a forum about good restaurants in the area and everyone said good things about 231.
I almost drove past it and I was a little afraid to go inside when I first saw it, because it's not the prettiest of places, but when someone opened the door to come out, a blast of smokey flavor hit me and I was instantly under it's spell. We ordered ribs and chicken and the pulled pork and it was a real struggle keeping the food untouched while we drove back to our hotel room. The taste was unreal. We've eaten barbecue all over this country and this was hands down the best. My mouth starts watering just thinking about it.
If we ever get back to the area, my first meal will be at 231 without question.
Best barbeque hands down. Baked beans are primo! This is one of the famous "hole in the wall" places for BBQ. If you are looking for an elegant atmosphere, keep driving brother. This is a small place where most patrons pick up and go but for the true BBQ lover you will want to eat there and enjoy the down home surroundings not to mention the heavenly aroma coming from the kitchen. This is my favorite BBQ in the Dothan area and anywhere else for that matter. Beware they are closed on Sunday and Monday.
I frequently stop while driving between Ozark and Dothan. The smoked chicken is absolutely wonderful. Full of flavor and very moist. The baked beans are flavored well and the potato salad is often still slightly warm, which I love. Great place to pick up a quick meal to take home. Not much seating available, especially at lunchtime when it is extremely busy.
