Bracken's definitely has the best old fashioned burgers anywhere within a 50 mile radius. They use real meat, not that fast food artificial stuff. The chicken is also great. An order of fries or onion rings is so big sometimes I can't finish them all. My only complaint is the odd hours of operation, the place closes around 2pm, and then reopens around 4pm.
I have been searching for any info on Big R Drive Inn... and was happy to see there might still be one that survived. My dad (Bob Bergeron) was a dentist in Jefferson, Louisiana (a suburb of New Orleans) owned a Big R on Jefferson Hwy in front of the Jefferson Drive-Inn show from about 1961 to 63. I worked there one summer and remember how good the broasted chicken, burgers, root beers and malts were. And the bar-b-que beef was the real deal! I believe that the name "Big R" was named after the owner of the franchise... Mr. Richmond. I met him once at our "grand opening". A very friendly guy. My dad and his brother, Normand Bergeron, who was also a dentist in Alexandria, Louisiana, owned a Big R there on Bolton Ave for many years. Both Big R's are long gone, but the memory of the food and 50's 60's atmosphere is still a 5 star one.
If anyone else has any more info on the "Big R" in Brewton (or any other Big R) I hope they will let us know more. I am going to bookmark this and check back every few months. I plan on stopping at the one in Brewton the next time we go to Gulf Shores. I wonder if they still have the cardboard to-go root beer containers that are shaped like a megaphone?
WOW!!: Feel like you are back in the 60's. They are very friendly and the food is real good.
