I guess it's more than a pile of smoked meat that you have to be looking for. Old school BBQ joints like this are good smoked meat, strong sides, delicious desserts and the feeling you get when you walk in the door, like everyone in there knows you. If you're scoring a smoked meat competition you'll surely be a critic. If you're seeking the text book BBQ joint. Shuford's is it. You can buy smoked pork at a million places, but you don't find many joints like this any more. The food's good here and the key is knowing how to order. don't even look at the menu. Just use the force and order what you want to eat. Excellent white beans andgreat banana pudding are a must. I strongly advise the brunswick stew if you're a stew person and don't ask for extra extra hot sauce unless you mean it.
Not the prettiest place, but that's not really what matters when it comes to BBQ now is it? The prices are reasonable compared to most other BBQ places in this town that over charge. The BBQ sandwich, baked beans and onion rings were delicious. I'll definitely be back.
Not All That!: We saw Shuford's Smokehouse featured on the Food Network and thought "WOW, what have we been missing?" We tried it, and were very dissapointed. They make it look really good for TV. The pork sandwich was tough, as if it had been warmed in a microwave. The Chicken BBQ sandwich was a little better. The small run-down seating area had dirty carpet and windows. The screen on the windows had large pieces missing. We won't go back. Couch's, in Ooltewah, ranks way above this place.
