Read the other reviews but really wanted to try a new place. have lived here 3 years now. A time line...Got there @ 8:03 PM and was told of 30 minute wait. We were seated @ 8:15. Had drinks @ 8:16 with Zesta crackers and margarine. I expected bread from a "top notch" steak house. Order placed @ 8:21 Salad arrive @ 8:24. Waiter checked on us @ 8:27. Table across had to send back their steak. New one arrived in 5 minutes. Empty glass @ 8:38 & had refill @ 8:40 with food order. Ordered filets with baked potatoes. Excellent potatoes! Steaks were quite normal and were a very nice cut. The Well Done steak was perfect and my Medium was cooked Rare. The two little rolls wrapped in a napkin were cool. Waiter checked on us again 8:51. Table was bussed @ 9:03 Check arrived 9:07 We were out the door...
All in all, it seemed a very clean place to eat. Most of the other patrons were 50+ in years and most all men in suits and ties. Very nice atmosphere for JC. 1 Soft drinks, two steaks, & one salad was $45.00. Will visit again but I am not in a hurry...
New to JC we heard that the Peerless used to be the place to go for great steaks. Well, clearly USED to be is the key word. We went for a special birthday dinner which was a disaster. Our waitress was sweet and tried her best to handle all the problems we experienced but there is no way a server can control what they are given to serve. The restaurant atmosphere seemed nice and with the dimmed lighting it is hard to give a valid comment on cleanliness. But to warn you about the food is very easy.
There are some things you need to be prepared for. The first is that in an establishment in which you can pay $30+- per person for a meal you are given stale saltine crackers to eat while your food is prepared. In addition, if you think those prices will include even the simplest side salad you are seriously mistaken. With your entree you get EITHER a potato OR whatever vegetable they are offering. Both of these things explain why nothing is noted on the single page, limited menu for what your entree comes with. In addition you can have their limited seafood offerings fried or pepper butter sauteed, but even with special request they refuse to broil it for you.
Our appetizer contained crabmeat which was rancid and inedible and the balance of it was lukewarm at best and tasteless. Our baked potatoes were cool and mostly uncooked. We asked for butter and sour cream but servers are NOT ALLOWED to give you any toppings to put on your potatoes as you desire as you eat - they have to put them on for you. I am not a child and prefer to have my toppings on the side and put them on my food myself in small increments and was quite put off by this. We ordered the prime rib which should be pink, tender and in its own 'au jus'. It was grey and stuck dryly to the plate. It gave off an odor and had a taste that one would equate with spoiled canned dog food. Even the garnish on the plates was spoiled and edged with brown slime. The owner came over and when we explained the problems (which were clear to both see and smell) ...are you sitting down??...he proceeded to reach onto the plate, picked up the whole piece of meat and squished it between his fingers, telling us it was "out of this world". I was truly horrified. He then walked away without saying another word.
We have discussed our experience in the two days since and have heard more horror stories from those who used to be loyal customers years ago but say they will never return. Most were that the food was not fresh, was tasteless and overpriced but accounts included the same owner addressing other customer complaints in a similarly horrifying fashion. One said he had EXTREME amounts or gristle he had to cut out of his steak and when the owner came over HE ATE THE GRISTLE off of the customer's plate and said it was fine. In another case we were told there had been an 'unidentifiable object' in the steak and when the owner looked at it and still could not identify it HE PUT IT IN HIS MOUTH!
If I had not experienced what I had myself I would probably have doubted these accounts or thought they had in the very least been a bit embellished, but I think you should know. I wish we had been forewarned and given the chance to make another choice. We work very hard for our money as I'm sure do you and just wanted a special night out. When you go to a "Fine Dining" restaurant you should both expect and receive a Fine Dining experience with fresh, safe food. In addition to food that was not only bad, but potentially unsafe, the actions of the owner were not only horrifying, they were inexcusable and unconscionable. Make your own decisions, but please make informed ones.
This is the 3rd time I've eaten at Peerless- service good, but food not! I entertain clients and after another disappointing meal - I am moving my next Dinner with 9-10 clients to another restaurant. Several other guests made the same comments about the past 3 times they too had dined there.
