Ugh, I used to visit this place back when it was a little hole-in-the-wall place called "Ginza". The older fellow making the sushi back then was incredible. It was a tiny place, unassuming, but fantastic. When it first became "Sushi Blues", it was still moderately okay, despite the obvious focus on decor rather than the food. But having been there twice, recently, I was disappointed to say the absolute least.
First off, the owner and other employees were too busy carousing at the bar with friends to seat us. That's fine though, I was there for the food. So, when the sushi came at last, I was, uh, aghast. Yeah, aghast. The rolls were insanely tiny, malformed, and sloppy. I have honestly made better-looking rolls my FIRST TIME!! Also, there was practically no taste to them, despite the rolls being one of my favorites of all time - spicy tuna! I rarely send food back, or even muster up anger at bad food or service, but I was extremely irritated that night. The food we were served was bad enough, but the price was the icing on the cake. Incredibly high.
If you want excellent sushi, I would suggest Asako, in Bristol Virginia off of exit 7. For the price of a deformed, haphazard Cali roll at Sushi Blues, you can get a surf-clam-filled Key West Roll at Asako, which comes out looking like a work of art, and tastes out of this world good! Those guys know what they're doing, and make incredible sushi.
I do think the new name, "Sushi Blues", is quite deserved, because that's what I had when I left the place - sushi blues.
great place to eat sushi. food was good and menu had something for everyone. we had our entire family and we all sat together and the kids had a great time.
When the Sushi Chef has to smell the fish before he serves it should be an indicator of the quality.
I personally witnessed this happening.....SCARY!
