User Rating: 5 out of 5 starsFeatured in Hit Song by Marc Cohen: This restaurant is featured in in Marc Cohen's first single, "Walking in Memphis." I haven't been there myself, but I've heard that the fried dill pickles are really good and that the place just oozes soul. The line in the song goes like this:
"Muriel plays piano, every night at the Hollywood"
Apparently, Muriel was a real artist who played gospel at the cafe every Friday night. She has since passed away, but is immortilized by Cohn's lyrics. In 1986, Marc Cohn visited the Hollywood Cafe and was invited to sing Amazing Grace with Muriel. This encounter inspired him to write his hit song, released in 1991. Cohn won the grammy award for best new artist that year.
