My wife and I ate at Keifer's a couple of times during a week long stay in Jackson. In terms of just being a casual, inexpensive place to eat, we enjoyed it. The food was enjoyable, the waiters were friendly enough, and the semi outdoor ambience was relaxing. We had to queue at the counter to pay on the way out, but that's OK. Overall, it was good enough for us to go back.
Yum. A great Greek and American restaurant (they serve delicious gyros and pitas and other Greek specialties along with "cottage fries" which are basically thick-sliced potato "chips" that are cooked just until they are moist and slightly crisp like French fries. A nice place to eat with a fun, casual atmosphere and good food at reasonable prices.
Yes, this is a story of "the way things used to be"! When there was one Keifer's on Poplar and the owner worked behind the very busy counter, the gyro's were wonderful - so were the cottage fries. That was back in the80s. I had returned to the South and lunch there yesterday. Served by college kids who were more concerned with how quickly they could get the meal to the table than actually looking at the food they served. The gyro's were so dry - the meat was bland - the fries so over-cooked that they were almost chips. We ate most of them even though the yogurt sauce did not have the garlic flavor, nor the thin consistency that used to allow the wonderful sauce to run down your hands and arms. The Baklava was dry, far too crunchy and OLD.
Yes, we ate, paid and declared that we would never eat there again. It is so sad to see an icon die.
