Awesome food. Everything is fresh.....healthy and delicious.
5 stars!
I know that bagel shops aren't as popular in the South as other parts of the country, but Southbound Bagel and Coffee Shop is a little diamond in the rough! The bagels are soft and delicious - we get these for many of our morning division meetings. The sandwiches are great - an excellent alternative to all the chain places in town. Just wish it wasn't all the way downtown, but it's well worth the trip!
This excellent little niche is where the California Sandwich Shop was for many many years. Fret not! Southbound makes their own bagels, artisan breads, specialty cheese mixes and spreads right on site... and I mean right! Add fresh bread to fresh veggies, deli meats, lox, homemade curried chicken salad (my fave), and you have a lunch to remember, and come back for. Fresh brewed iced tea is, of course, the choice to go with your to-die-for sandwich.
If you happen by and want some breakfast food; Southbound also serves gourmet-to-order omelettes and egg scrambles to go with the fresh bagels, bagel sandwiches, awesome fresh-brewed coffee, and hot teas. Trust me, you will keep coming back to this place.... One more thing. Just in case you happen to be in town on Saturday, go by for a homemade cinnamon roll you will never forget. Just remember they close at 1p on Saturday so plan accordingly.
Easy parking is on the right in the middle of the block. Street parking is available along Front street but it fills up fast during lunch and on Saturday mornings. Its only 50 to 75 yards from the middle of the block parking lot to your seat in Southbound, so no worries if street parking is full.
The atmosphere is intimate. There is a two seat lunch counter in front of the grille/sandwich fixing table. There are a couple of 4-seat tables, the rest are 2-seaters but it doesn't matter if you have 8 because its an intimate seating arrangement. Outside the Front street entrance there are a couple of bistro tables which are shaded the entire time the restaurant is open for business. During the fall and spring these tables are nearly always occupied. Inside are books to read, magazines to peruse, and newspapers to rattle if you are into exciting your mind and your taste buds at the same time. Windows line the 2 exterior walls (its a pie-wedge shaped building) giving a good view of the train depot and the Calico Mall.
They accept cash and major credit/debit cards. Breakfast or lunch will set you back less than $10 for most of the menu items, including drink; which is a bargain for the level of taste you will get here. These guys genuinely want you to enjoy their food and it shows.
