    Worst garbage I ever ate and would NEVER go back. Dried out meat that looked like it was a week old. Sides not much better. Stay away at all costs.

    A Kentucky institution for over 15 years. Vince Staten, author and food critic for the Louisville Courier Journal, traveled America reviewing BBQ for his book, "Real Barbecue: The Only Barbecue Book You'll Ever Need : A Guide to the Best Joints, the Best Sauces, the Best Cookers-And Much More", before opening his own joint in Prospect Kentucky on US 42.

    Now located further down the road, Statens, as the locals call it, has expanded into a new home complete with full bar and big TVs to enjoy the house sport, auto racing. If it's got wheels, they'll probably be watching it run.

    All the meat is expertly smoked in house and hand pulled (not sliced or chopped) so all you get is high quality, tender meat, no fat or connective tissue.

    The 6 homemade sauces are distinct:
    vinegar based
    North Carolina - spicy, peppery
    Memphis - less peppery than NC but just as zesty

    tomato based
    Texas Sweet - the most popular sauce, sweet and tangy
    Texas Hot - Texas Sweet with some heat
    Jack Sauce - thick and tangy with a hint of Jack Daniels
    Legal Limit - the hottest sauce, habanero mash will make ya sweat

    They also specialize in ribs. Come on a Thursday for all you can eat rib night.

    I am a local who has eaten BBQ all over the south and midwest. Statens is authentic, friendly and well managed. The owner lives down the road and can frequently be seen in the open kitchen or tending bar. Their BBQ and sauces are top notch. I eat there 3 days a week and am never disappointed. Try the famous banana pudding!

    Yummm: Nothing's better than a pulled pork sandwich with Jack sauce. Oh wait...the Oreo pudding.
