Worth a 13-hour train trip from Chicago: I went to Pap's for the first time last week. I am still drooling over their hushpuppies (the world's best, gotta be) and their succotash. None of the online recipe sites have a succotash recipe that seems like it'd be nearly as good, so I might have to bribe the chef or something to get his or her recipe. Thank God this place isn't in Chicago, or (1) you'd never get in the door without a two-hour wait, and (2) I would completely abandon my helthy-eating habits in favor of all that Southern deliciousness.
I Sure Miss Elvis Cooking My Fish: Pap's Place will always be at the top of my list of favorite restaurants. My family, friends, and I enjoyed many wonderful evenings at Paps. Although the wonderful taste of the good ol southern food no longer lingers the fond memories of Paps is forever in my mind. If the wonderful catfish and all of the trimmings, the messy finger lickin' good BBQ ribs, the best cole slaw and hushpuppies in MS, the calorie filled homemade desserts, or all of the other southern favorites aren't enough for you, then the very fact that an Elvis twin does all of the cooking should bring you back time and again. I miss the Friday nights running to Pap's Place from Starkville, MS. In fact, it was a difficult decision to accept a new job in Texas or stay close to Pap's. It is indeed true, money doesn't buy happiness and in my case leaving Pap's behind certainly was a sacrifice in the "bliss column."
The moment you walk into the converted five and dime store restaurant right on Main Street in Ackerman you know that you've stepped back in time as your fellow diners, sitting family style at folding tables, smile at you momentarily and then return to their transfixed status of imbibing on true southern fare. You'll be greeted by either the owner or one of the friendly employees upon walking into the restaurant and immediately taken to a table (if one's available). Should you have to wait to be seated you'll enjoy walking down the quiet and quant streets of Ackerman as you find yourself transported into a Faulkner novel.
Bottom line, Pap's Place is worth the time and effort to drive off the beaten pathway to Ackerman. In fact, I recommend that you plan your next vacation around a trip to Pap's Place. As Pap's crazy commercials attest, "They fill your belly and don't empty your wallet." Long live Pap's Place!
