Got very very sick of just a little sushi. Not spectacular the first time I tasted it, and far worse the second.
We've been there twice after moving in town. WORST sashimi in town. Fish was old on both vists. We were afraid to eat it on the most recent visit. Had to exchange it, but the owner/manager was rude.
W will never revisit this establishment again. Try Saki Blue in Ferncreek on Tuesday nights, or Asahi 10 minutes up the street-if you care about the quality of fish, and not just going there for cheap sake, old fish wrapped in rice, over colorful spicy mayo sauces to dress it up.
The following week, we discovered VERY friendly service at Asahi, with much higher quality.
In summary, Saki Blue is a great place for the non-advanturous Sushi eaters enjoying cheap sake. Nothing wrong with it, and this place could be a fun place with the $.01 Sake night. Another point needs to be expressed. Sashimi - the raw fish without rice should be ea. Sushi restaurant's showcase. If they don't even care, or can't even serve fresh fish for the Sashimi, then the rest of the Sushi is just old fish wrapped in rice, over flavored mayo sauces. You'll never know what hit you when you have the "runs" later. Be educated. Finally, the servers on both trips were GREAT. I suspect it's the $.01 Sake, and their great service keep this place going.
I've tried a number of Japanese restaurants since I've moved to Kentucky(from so. california) and Sakura Blue is definatley the best. I've even gotten my boyfriend(who was totally new to the sushi experience) to REQUEST we go there for Date Night's. The service is always well enough, we get drinks when we need them and they're good about special orders, but not exactly talkative. That might be because most in there don't speak great english(except for the guys performing at the tables).
The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars for me is I tend to order Take-Out from them and every time I've had an issue. Whether it be that they didnt give me salad dressing, the sushi rolls looked thrown together, or the person answering the phone had to call me back to regive my order because he didn't understand it the first time, "You wanted Futomaki? What's Futomaki?" "It's a sushi roll, its on your menu..." But I did get all the food I ordered that time, tho again the Sushi rolls looked tossed in the box, and that guy may have been new, so it won't dissuade me from ordering out or going there again.
It can be quite busy on a friday night down Shelbyville, but if you don't mind a little traffic I'd recommend Sakura Blue. Good food, pretty good prices(I wouldnt want to eat 'cheap' sushi anyways, blech) and a nice atmosphere. Don't leave before you get your artfully cut orange from the sushi bar when you're done eating! Mmmm yum!
