I recently moved into the neighborhood and I cannot get enough Mi Hacienda. The food is excellent, portions big, and it's cheap!

What a shame. What started out as a great little neighborhood "hacienda," has truly 'gone south.' Years ago, this was one of Toledo's most frequented restaurants - the Surf. It became Mi Hacienda a few years ago. But like many ventures, apathy sets in, and things change.

The up-side is the decor. It's vibrant, colorful, and downright flashy. The unique carved chairs and the thick glass-top tables are really interesting. There is ample seating, and if you have a large group, they are more than willing to push a bunch of tables together to accommodate your party. If your beverage of choice is a margarita, you will probably be disappointed. They are small, expensive, and are a little shy on the "main ingredient," if you catch my drift.

Now, the bad news. This place once served really authentic Mexican cuisine. It was well-prepared, plentiful, and moderately priced. Spanish was the main language among the wait- and kitchen-staff, so you knew it was not your Taco Bell. Regrettably, something has changed.

They used to offer daily specials. The Sunday special, in particular, was a terrific chimichanga - large, smothered in cheese, served with refried beans and rice, and more than enough for a meal. They have discontinued the special. So, we tried the burrito. Mistake. It was small (not enough for even the smallest of appetites), dry, and tasted like it came from a can. The other entrees faced a similar fate.

What has not changed is their bountiful basket of warm nacho chips and great salsa. If you can make a meal out of that, then go. Otherwise, forget it. And BTW, their prices are not exactly gentle on the pocketbook. There are so many other spectacular Mexican restaurants in Toledo, you can do much better. Candidly, you'd do better at the new Del Taco.

I used to like the food a few years ago, but returned only to find out the food has good down hill. Tasted like it was just dumped out of a can. No taste and the shells were soggy. I asked for the special. The waiter told me one price and charged me a completely different price. Apparently it has really gone down hill.
