    A MIXED BAG (OF SPIDERS)...
Let me start off by saying that some of the details about our anniversary trip aboard the Nautica Queen seemed very well attended to and others, well, not so much. We arrived early to try to get a table for two, as it was our Anniversary...and a particularly special one (my wife and I are expecting our first baby in about a month). The woman who took my reservation suggested putting in a request for a table for two, though she could offer no promises. Other staff said the same thing: that upon boarding, mention that you'd like a table for two as they are very limited. When we did, the maitre-de shot it down immediately by saying they 'didn't have tables for two on the cruise'. Really? Hmph. Interesting. Then why does every other staff member say the contrary? If we can't have one, just say so.
When we got to our table, there were large spiders on the windows (inside as well as out)and hanging from the lights, rising and dropping to within inches of the patrons heads. The whole bow was watching with jaws dropped, screaming with every pesky plunge. Why didn't we say something to the staff? Well, we did...FOUR TIMES before anything was done about it. Seriously! Our individual server twice and even the maitre-de who literally turned and walked away without saying anything. Guess he doesn't like spiders, either. Finally, a server from another section took notice of some of the passengers jumping in and out of their seats and came over and took care of the one nose-diving our dinner table. She got a standing ovation, unlike ANYONE who had ANYTHING to do with our seating or our section. Spiders- these things happen, I'm sure...but guys, one look at your windows up front and you'll see precisely what I'm talking about. Got a broom? A quick fix, but pretty gross for a lot of people trying to enjoy their meals at $50 per plate. Oh yeah, and your speakers up there don't work, either. We could barely hear your announcements.
Which brings us to dinner. The staff behind the buffet were very nice and friendly and took pride in their spread, which was presented quite nicely. The food was decent: think wedding catered food without the extra creamy mashed potatoes and you'll have a very good idea of what's going on there. Nothing ground-breaking, but par for the course. Over dry chicken and green beans of the most unexciting variety. Beer was relatively fair priced at $3.50 and $4.50 a bottle. But $2.50 for eight ounces of ice and pink lemonade and no refills? C'mon!
The gem of the trip was topside at sunset. The views were fantastic and it was very romantic. I tip my hat to all the staff who were so helpful. Some really shined (the guys at the buffet, the server from the other section. The guy who attends the ship's entry before launch also staffed the topside during the trip. He was particularly friendly and impressive in his unfailing attention for three hours.
That about sums it up. They took pictures at boarding which you had to pay extra big bucks (of course) to keep. My wife, being eight months pregnant, used the facilities on several occasions and offered no complaints. I'd ask her, but she's still sleeping, hopefully not dreaming about spiders. Certain thing were great while others were, quite honestly, surprisingly bad. Would I go back? Possibly, but only while it's warm enough on the lake to go topside. And I'd certainly consider a weeknight or some time when I could get tickets at a discount.
