What a terrific SMALL Italian place. Excellent and attentive service, The very best pizza in NE Ohio (New York Style). Can be somewhat pricey but well worth it.
Outstanding food, wine and service: The best pizza around. Delicious pasta with attention to layered flavors and fresh ingredients. They make the best Bellinis, refreshing in summer, and for winter, some of the most full flavored red wines, an outstanding complement to the food. The servers are always helpful and the owners Brian and Alicia, always greet the regulars by name. A special place to dine.
That was then.......: but this is now. The raves for Marotta's I see all come from early 2005 when in fact this place was worth standing in line for. Less than a year after their opening we (three of us) became very disenchanted with the quality of the food here and stopped going. But being Pizza fans and Italian food especially we gave it another try last night.
An appetizer of mussels should have been wonderful but while the mussels themselve were quite nice and the 'whatever' garnish placed on top the mussels was also very nice the murky sauce lacked any personality. It tasted like it came from a can. Or a box. It was nothing.
We ordered two different pizzas. How do you screw up a pizza with tomato sauce and pepperoni and garlic and onions? To start off with we think they make a pizza dough that tastes like dry, bland bread. And I'd bet that sauces here never heard of oregano. Even that little touch would have helped. if fresh. Oh, I almost forgot. They started us off with a plate of tasteless olive oil. That's a very bad blunder what with so many restaruants that will serve some very good to excellent olive oil in place of butter even if it has to be requested. In any case there was no balsamic vinegar, no grated cheese or even better would have been shredded cheese. We did get some freshly (?) ground pepper.
The other pizza had more and different toppings on it and we almost got some taste out of that one. We figure reheats of the take home will require a lot of 'doctoring' to be palatable.
The bottle of Italian wine we ordered was wonderful however it is beyond me how food of this nature justifies that pricy wine list. (?) It's a very nice wine list, just out of line with the food.
I must also mention as a plus that the wait staff was wonderfull. The staff and the wine compliment one another excellently but when will the food ever get back to its former glory? I'd be happy to wait in line again if it ever does.
