Best pie in the valley. Local people keeping it real. WARNING: "Chain" restaurant lovers looking for all the bells and whistles to mask quality food and who want up sold on everything you order, need not bother. And these guys don't herd you in and out. One of Youngstowns Landmarks. Great wines "by the glass", beer and bar selections! Keep it up!
There is a distinct dingy odor when you walk in. Noone lets you know whether or not to seat yourself (which you should by the way). Once you're seated, the menu is very limited and on Sundays they only have pizza (or so they told us). A table full of locals came in and got appetizers. Our waitress came to our table like three times. We were there over an hour. We were playing Keno and the bartender was SUPER slow. Twice I watched as the numbers I wanted to play won, to no avail since I couldn't get the bartender to print me a ticket in time. The pizza was actually good, hence why I gave them ONE star (that and zero wasn't an option). All of this, AND the place is in a crappy neighborhood on the wrong side of the tracks. Our waitress came out of the kitchen when we were done eating and told us she would be right with us (we were assuming to give us the check). After she came out 4 or 5 more times, I had to ask her for the check. Two pizzas, one pop, 30 dollars. Not even a great price. I am from the relative area, and can assure anyone looking into this place to not bother. There are plenty of other decent places in the area. Heck, have McDonald's before you go here.
Avalon Gardens is a Youngstown Treasure, sure it's in a really bad area (what part of Y-town is not these days?) and it's a little dated and maybe even a little dingy but this is pizza and beer at it's best, and how it's meant to be! AG has a tired and true following, I fell in love with the pizza in college when I went to YSU and now live and Cleveland and can never find any pizza in Cleveland even close to Youngstown Pizza (Avalon, Wedgewood, uptown, Belleria, etc.), every pizza here is a disappointment. I return back to Youngstown every couple months, to visit friends and hit up some AG pizza and play a game of boccie, another sport that only exists in Youngstown. Avalon Gardens stands for what Youngstown was and still is in places like this, great Italian food, friends and fun. Give their pizza a try, it will have you coming back too.

"Avalon Gardens is a Youngstown Treasure, sure it's in a really bad area (what part of Y-town is not these days?)" While your review is right on as far as the Av is concern, your assertion about Youngstown is dead wrong and another exampple of the IGNORANCE people have about this community. I haven't heard or read of a crime on that part of Belmont in YEARS. Nothing wrong with that area, unless of course you're bothered by African American families... are you? That part of the North Side butts up against one of the nicer neighborhoods, actually -- lots of college faculty and staff. And by the way, Bocce is played the world over. It's from Italy.
That part of Youngstown is trash. Not as bad as some of the south sides, but I would never go through there just because.
