*** Please note that this review is from 2007. The restaurant is no longer as good as it was, with the new owner. Please see my new comments. ***
Alpine-Alpa is now called Alpine Homestead. It was taken over by new owners, several years ago, and what a difference! The old restaurant was going down hill, with very poor service. The new restaurant has better serivce, although not perfect. The best change is the food! They have a great buffet! The world's largest cuckoo clock has been totally renovated and now keeps time right. It was also moved to the first floor, and is free to watch. The former owners charged 25 cents to see it. The new owners, however, did remove a few of the decorations. I am not sure why. Missing are the alpine maiden who popped out of the window doors above the entrance, the mountain climber and copper pots, and the dwarf village.
There is blues music by different bands on Saturday nights. This costs extra if you sit in the main dining area. So if you don't care, you can opt to sit in the adjoining dining area. You can still hear the music though.
The new owners have some Amish employees. Most are pretty good workers, but I have encountered some who really don't know what they are doing outside of exactly what they are taught. I have had a lot of "I don't really know" answers to my questions about billing and other things related to the restaurant. But my problems have not just been with the Amish employees, although many have been. The restaurant is now closed on Sundays, as a day of rest, as are many restaurants in the area.
If in the Stark / Wayne / Holmes County Amish Country area, I highly recommend stopping at this restaurant.
THIS BUFFET FEATURES 56 ITEMS
I did not enjoy my experience at this buffet. The website and other sources on the internet indicate that the food is of Swiss/German influence. While the food did have that homemade taste, the buffet was limited and a little uninteresting, having two meat choices this day: fried chicken legs (ONLY legs) or meatloaf. Upon entering the dining room for the first time, we saw tables that were laden with dirty dishes while the dining roomâs two servers appeared to be exhausted as they frantically cleared tables between drink refills. At one point shortly into our dining experience, the buffet had no clean plates, no flatware, no extra napkins to be found, and several pans on the steam table devoid of food. Prices were higher than indicated on their website and there was no homemade ice cream as advertised either. Meals were either $8.99 (for ONE trip) or $10.99. Also note that children are now charged full price for the buffet and you cannot leave a tip for your server using your credit card (cash only). Upon checkout I made a comment to the cashier regarding the tired staff and lack of food (particularly the lack of chicken choices). She, in turn, issued several sneeringly sarcastic rants at me all the while charging me over $41.00 for our 3 buffet meals and taking the money in the same breath! I would soon learn that this was the establishmentâs owner!
Misrepresenting yourself by having discrepancies between what people see marketed on your website versus the live visit is one thing and already pretty bad at that. Taking money from your customer with one hand while literally slapping them in the face with the other is quite another and not an option without its consequences. Hence, this illuminating review. I cannot recommend dining at Grandmaâs Alpine Homestead for fear of one being served that 56th item: the side dish of hostility, personally served to you by its owner in exchange for any criticism.

... "But my problems have not just been with the Amish employees, although many have been."... who then, besides the Amish employees? You gave this restaurant 4 stars despite indicating that there were problems⦠and âmanyâ of them?! You only mentioned that the buffet was "great"...myself and other viewers might like to know what was so great about it
The review that I had written in November 2007 was based on the owner of the restaurant at that time. We returned to the restaurant in the summer of 2008, and to our surprise found that the restaurant had changed. It was no longer run by the same person. The employees were completely different (no Amish that I noticed), and the food quality and quantity was reduced. So I questioned one of the employees about the changes. They indicated that the new owner was the mother of the previous owner, and confirmed that changes were indeed made. Then on our way out, we stopped by the gift shop. The type and quality of the gifts had reduced as well. To sum it up, we were very disappointed with the new owner's changes. We knew at that time that the place was being run into the ground, as it was reminiscent of the previous owner who last ran the restaurant as Alpine Alpa. So we decided until new ownership comes, we will not be returning to that restaurant. The question is: did this woman purposely run this restaurant out of business? I can say that she had no business running it the way it was run, in order to be successful. All she had to do was keep it the same as it was with her daughter. Recently, my wife was told that the restaurant has gone out of business. So let's pray that a new (better) owner comes forward to give new life again to this area landmark. It is also sad that about 1-2 years ago, a group of volunteers moved and restored the World's Largest Cuckoo clock that is on the premises, and made the restaurant world famous. Now, with the restaurant out of business, it cannot be enjoyed.
