Seneca Caverns...Family Fun!: We went at the end of July/beginning of August and had a great time. This is a small, out of the way privately owned cavern system that offers guided tours...tickets cost 11.00 per adult and 6.50 for the kids, so this isn't a cheap activity and you can't really pair it up with anything else as it's really the only thing there. The tour takes about 20 mins and there is a significant temperature drop, the brochure says it's about 54 degrees...which we enjoyed after being out in the heat, but if you go in the off season or early in the season, be sure to take a light jacket.
We have two kids ages 6 and 8 and they didn't have any trouble, though I was worried about the boy falling down in some of the areas with out rails...he scampered up and down with no trouble though. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with kids smaller than that and definitely not if your kids are more clumsy than average. it's pretty steep, but I'm fat and had no trouble getting up and down.
It is a cave, so if you're tall...you'll really need to watch your head, there are some extremely low patches...overall, the tour was fun, if a bit kitschy...but isn't that what makes these things worth it!
The gift shop has all the same junk you find at EVERY tourist attraction shop, the rock "eggs," geode book ends, cheap jewelry (that they charge a fortune for), tee shirts and the like.
My strongest recommendation is to plan a day trip with this a PART of the trip not the main destination...you could easily work your way up to Lake Eerie from here and do some fishing or hiking...or other touristy things...we enjoyed ourselves and this was our kids very first trip to a cavern.
We think most families would enjoy it, but not as a stand alone attraction...especially on hot summer days!! Our family verdict...fun, but you really couldn't make a day out of this alone.
