Finest Sausage Makers in the Western Hemisphere: I was a weekly customer at the Kroeger brothers' meat counter for the seven years I lived in the Cincinnati area, and I have continued to stock my freezer with their products via mail order for the 5 years that have passed since I and my family moved to Massachussetts.
Mark and Mike Kroeger are personable, accomodating and eager for suggestions from customers - - though improving most of their products would be nearly impossible!
Best of the best? Go Cajun! They may be Cincinnatians of German extraction, but the Bayou Andouille (especially the hot variant) is better than the best stuff they make in New Iberia, LA. You also have to try the authentic Boudin, when available, not to mention the "Voodoo" chicken sausage. They have even produced cajun tasso in the past, with unbelievable results.
Some local favorites in addition to the above are corned beef sausage, swedish potato sausage, mild and hot German metts - - and I haven't even scratched the surface.
But this is a full service store as well. Try their own smokehouse ham or smoked pork chops and you'll know what I mean. Mark and Mike set me up with racks of lamb for 16 for a family gathering and I heard nothing but raves.
Thank god they still send me their products in the mail! Losing direct access to these guys was one of the first regrets I had when I left the Cincinnati area (I'm not kidding!).
You won't be disappointed if you are guided by my advice. This is the place for the real thing, no matter where you live. . . . .
