This is definitely more of a "conversation piece" restaurant for a long lingering lunch. Don't expect anything to blow your culinary socks off, and the service is V E R Y S L O W and while the waitstaff (I've never seen more than two people plus the host/owner(?) trying to pick up the slack) is harried and not at all versed in the food they are serving.
I asked a few questions about ingredients and was met with a blank stare from my server, who then made a quick exit to "check on another table".
The specialty of the house is their "Chicken Velvet Soup" which I'd be willing to bet is from a mix (the server told me the cook was going to make a fresh batch and it would be about 10 minutes). It is thick and creamy, but also has that familiar starchy "powdery/pasty" taste, so don't expect to be magically transported back to LS Ayres' heyday with the soup.
This is a nice place to take Grandma to lunch, but the prices are a bit inflated ($8 for a cup of soup and a sandwich) and combined with the slow and uneducated service, don't expect a great culinary experience. You'll get fed, but don't even dare ask for a substitution for the greasy potato chips they serve with your sandwich!
Friendly, Fast, value priced: Cabage Rose is small, friendly atmosphere, value priced food for relaxed business or shopping break lunches. Never had a bad experience in all the years its been open.
