Fern Oaks - Quiet Resting Place: Fern Oaks is a secluded cemetary that is away from major streets. It is can only be found with directions from someone who has been there. It is one of the oldest cemetaries in the area that would allow colored people in Northwest Indiana to be buried because from 1920-1970 other cemetaries were off limits to colored burial. Even though the cemetary is not that easy to find as with all other cemetaries that are on most main streets.
The cemetary has been a very good place to lay one's loved ones. It doesn't tend to flood and has good hours to visit if you want to. It also has helpful peoople who will help you find gravesites and give you good directions on the grounds. One draw back to the cemetary is that it doesn't endorse large mounuments but instead flat ground headstones. The grounds has well cut grass, old trees that dot the grounds, and sections that are easily accessible by the roads. The cemetary has room to expand and has slowly been expanding to allow especially families to continue bury family with each other. It is a place where some of the oldest colored families are buried with large headstones and mounuments.
I would rate this cemetary as a very well cared for and historical cemetary of the local area and especially to the minority community and would be great place to bury your loved one.
