Food is neither authentic nor tasty. There are a lot of other places that have better food. Try Memo's in Port de Leau in Highland.
On April 1st, their anniversary by the way, Mom and I decided on El Taco Real. It had been years since we'd been there and remembered their enchiladas to be very good. Not only were the enchiladas not dipped in chili ancho sauce, they were dipped in watered down mole sauce. Tasteless and bland. The chips were ok, nice and crisp. The dip was nothing more than warmed tomato sauce. We asked for another salsa and was given a small dish of "old" pico de gallo that tasted as though it was from last week. We asked for another dip, with more kick and was given a heated tomatillo sauce much like the warmed over tomato sauce. The beans were from a can and the rice was just ok. Definitely not as we remembered. Just like a lot of Mexican restaurants that open well, they don't maintain. They begin to cater to a different clientele that wouldn't know the difference between an authentic dish and a fast food gimmick. When El Taco Real opened so many years ago, yep it was the best. Sadly today, it is a memory.
This place definitely does not have great food. The tacos are average but I find the chicken to be very dry. You have to add a lot of sauce to help eat it. This is not authentic by no means. If you want a great taco then you willo have to drive to Taco Burrito House on Fullerton Avenue in Chicago! There is no place that compares to them. El Taco is where you go when you are starving and can eat anything. Even kids in Somalia would turn this food down.
