The Coney Island Weiner Stand is an institution in Fort Wayne. The buns are steamed as they should be, who wants to eat a hot dog on a dry bun? The sauce is less like a sauce and more like a meat topping, seasoned in the manner of Cincinnati Chili. These dogs are awesome!! You can't get anything like it anywhere else!! Not even "Cincinnati Chili" dogs can compare! We moved from the Fort Wayne area more than ten years ago, and whenever we go back for a visit, my kids still beg to stop by for a Coney Island dog! They are reasonably priced, too! Best of the best, we all miss them, and for them alone sometimes wish we still lived in the area!
I realize I am in the minority here, so this just has to be my taste preferences versus the others. I found the Coney's to be far over steamed causing the bun to feel soggy. While the Coney sauce was visible, it lacked taste and tasted virtually non-existent or possibly overwhelmed by the strong onion.
On the upside, the ambiance is exactly what you want in a hot dog institution. I was there in the evening after 6pm and it was pretty full. I was really expecting to be blown away here and I walked away very disappointed.
This is one place (and one of my favorite guity pleasures) I will miss if I ever leave Fort Wayne. As others have said, it is a classic and the coneys are in a class by themselves. Imagine White Castle opening a coney stand in the '50s and you're pretty much there! Onions and grease reign supreme!!
