The tour was fantastic! The facility was a bit more primitive than one might envision, but that was to be expected...after all, it is a not-for-profit rescue and not a for-profit zoo. The biggest difference between this rescue and a zoo is that you can get within inches of the cats whereas they are very far away at a zoo.
We went mid-day which fell after feeding time so the cats were quiet for the most part. The guide recommended we either come in the morning or in the evening, which is when the cats were most active.
Overall we were very happy and would go back again.
Excellent: Our guided tour was quite informational. I had never been to an animal sanctuary before and did not know what to except. It was wonderful to see these exotic, beautiful animals being saved from lives of being mistreated or/and neglected. These people are sacraficing their time and finances to make a piece of our world better. My husband and I will definitely go back again. The entrance price was quite reasonable and the visit was something we will remember. The rescue is ran on mostly donations and the new food processing center for the animals is being built, and the Cat Tales newsletter for April 2007 stated that the projected completetion date will hopefully be later this year...
The best rescue center ever -- Better than any zoo: Unlike the other review listed here we had a wonderful time. Keep in mind they are a non for profit agency so the improvements are slow but always in process.
They have moved the butcher house to the back, they have been in the process of this for a few months now but because they materials are donated it takes a while. They do not butcher animals while the place is opened. Only before it opens and after it closes because that is when they feed the cats.
Also I noticed no smell of cat urine. Only the occasional whiff of their food that they hadn't finished but even that was minimal. It is unbelievably clean; I would compare this to any zoo. Unlike the zoo however, the cats are happy and healthy.
I was shocked by how big these animals really are. At the zoo you are so far away it is hard to judge their size. Here you are maybe 3 feet away (with a cage in between) it is great! The tigers make the cutest noises when they see Joe (the owner) they just run up to the fence and purr wanting him to pet them.
As far as the guest room, it was clean and I noticed no smell (and I have a very sensitive sense of smell). With the price of the room you get two days free admission. It is connected to the ownerâs house but has plenty of privacy for being in the heart of this rescue center. Joe and his wife are great!
I would highly recommend this to any one who loved animals. I would agree with the other review in one point, I do not recommend this is any little kids, matter of fact kids younger than 5 are discouraged. I only say this because the cats are so large and the adult wouldn't be able to enjoy it because kids would require constant supervision with the cages being so close.
The drive there (on state road 46) is beautiful and enjoyable, well worth the trip.
I will visit again and would encourage everyone to go and form their own opinion. I think Joe and his wife are some people to admire to devote their lives to this and when you see how much they truly love each cat it is heart warming! These cats are rescued from the worst of circumstances and are blessed to have found Joe.
