I first started going there a little less than a year ago. Thought it was a decent little place. However, as time has gone on, it has changed, and not for the better. Avoid dollar days (Tu-Th 11-3) at all costs. Place gets full of Non-English speaking clientele that fill up every single machine and let their kids run amuck like they own the place. The staff is overall pretty nice with the exception of one lady who happens to work during that time frame. She gets pissy when you ask for something at the counter and it interrupts her cell phone conversation. The owner seems a little tight and the driers seem like they could use a little tune up as far as heating up just a little better.
Also, and this isn't a knock towards anyone mentally challenged, learning disabled or anything of the like, but a laundromat is not a place to be holding a "class on learning how to be independent". The adults with the children were behaving worse than the children and he was essentially getting free child labor out of it as between pitching fits, the kids were cleaning machines and windows, not to mention getting in the way of all the customers. Couldn't take two steps and finish drying and folding my clothes without a little brat running into me or pushing me out of the way. Not even an "excuse me" or "sorry" and not even anything from the adults overseeing all of this. In fact, they were making the kids behavior worse. I'd love to know what school they were all from. I tried to nicely bring this to the owner's attention and all he could say was don't come in on Tuesdays. Should report him for using child labor. Laundromat is not a place to be teaching 10-12 year olds how to do adult jobs, that is what a classroom is for.
Overall, I like the idea of the $1 washers but he should know his competition (where I'll be going for awhile) does it for a longer period of time during the day. Also, the pinball games are in poor working condition and need a tune up but he actually charges a little less for refreshments than some others and does provide a TV and movies.
Makes the chore of laundry *almost* enjoyable: The place itself is a small, unassuming building on a quiet corner just outside downtown Lafayette. The clientele is a mix of students, recent immigrants, and those unfortunate individuals who, like me, find themselves without a washer and dryer of their own. But step inside, and suddenly having to lug your unwieldy basket of boxer shorts, wrinkled T-shirts and blue jeans past their prime doesn't seem so bad. The place is bright and clean, the washers and dryers are all in working order, and the staff is beyond friendly. In the evenings, they show movies you've seen before but wouldnt mind watching again as you fold your whites (The Fugitive, Forrest Gump, Stepford Wives). Disconcertingly, there is an open smoking lounge near the back of the facility (doesn't one wash clothes to get rid of cigarette smoke?), but I haven't seen too many patrons take advantage of the relaxed rules and light up. On a recent visit I lost 50 cents to an old video game ("Dragon's Lair II"). But isnt this a small price to pay for the opportunity to wash clothes in a clean, safe, friendly, and stress-free environment?
