On our way back to Cincinnati, my wife and I stopped to get gas and get something to eat. After gassing the car, we drove to Wendy's and it was closed. Boy, am I glad it was closed. I looked around and spotted your sign, went up and went in. Nice place you have, and the service was very nice. Good family ambience, and a great menu. We plan to visit your restaurant again, next time we're in the area. Please don't shrink the rolls!! Great job, Steve.
On the way home to Cincinnati,we got hungry. We saw the Beef House while gassing up our car and decided to stop in.
What a fantastic restaurant. The roast beef we had was so tender and delicious. The sides and salad were very good too.The dinner rolls are the best I've had in a long time. Our server was very courteous, and personable. The price was so affordable. We highly recommend this restaurant to everyone . We plan on coming back.
The Beef House is everything you want a real steakhouse to be. It's out of the way, which gives it a real 'down home' feel. Yet it's close enough to Champaign, Danville and even Indy to make it easy to get to. The restaurant is massive, yet at the same time feels very intimate. The building and furniture are very Frank Lloyd Wright-esque, which makes it feel sophisticated enough for a fancy date or meeting. The prices are very inclusive - for about $35 (give or take) you get a beverage, soup (try the beef vegetable), salad bar, steak and after-dinner coffee. The attire is casual, although nobody will look at you funny if you come in wearing dressy clothes. It's definitely a place that combines the best attributes of fancy urban steakhouses (white linen, nice furniture, etc) with the 'Texas Roadhouse'-style joints.
The rolls have been touted many times around here; they are in fact good. However, I prefer the salad bar(s). Very fresh lettuce, a huge variety of veggies, and lots of very rich pasta and potato salads. Plus all the creamy buttermilk ranch dressing you can handle.
Don't bother asking for A1 with your steak - you won't need it. The steaks are juicy, lean and tender, and I have never had to send one back to be cooked longer. In fact, the cooking area is in full view of the lobby, and all of the staff appears very competent. If you do like steak sauce, they sometimes have 'local' sauces on hand. Try Country Bob's Steak Sauce, it's like a sweet version of A1 - very good. Baked potatoes are always perfectly done, and veggies are crisp yet not undercooked - al dente, if you will.
Desserts are fantastic; exactly what you'd expect from a top-notch steakhouse. Although, I can never seem to find room to eat them! If you need to 'perk up' for the drive home, they have excellent coffee which is included with the price of dinner, although don't expect any espresso drinks or anything like that.
The service has always been very friendly and attentive. From the host/hostess to the servers and bus staff, your glass is always full and everyone always seems to be attending to your needs.
There is usually a line on busy days, but don't worry. The restaurant is so big (I would guess perhaps 1,000 seats?) that the line moves very quickly. There is PLENTY of parking, and I think they also have banquet halls on site. And, if that's not enough, there is a Pilot gas station across the street which has pretty low prices (at least compared to Illinois)...fill up on your way home!
I cannot possibly say enough about the Beef House. I have dined at some of the finest steak houses in the region - Jim Gould in Champaign, St. Elmo in Indy, Capital Grill in Chicago, Dierdorf and Hart's in St. Louis - all fine establishments. But dollar for dollar, pound for pound, the value, service, food and setting at the Beef House is by far the best. You just can't beat a outstanding, filling meal in an attractive location, for a very reasonable price! I would definitely recommend you stop by the Beef House even if it's a bit out of your way. Fantastic!
