Frank's has been in Ann Arbor awhile. It's not the best place to get breakfast, but is very local/divey. I used to go there every so often (despite the greasiness) until a recent experience.
We were actually thrown out of Frank's (Maynard Street) for supposedly not telling the server I was allergic to the gluten in the bread they placed on top of my omelet. When, in fact, my boyfriend explicitly said, "Can you put the toast on a different plate because she's allergic and can get really sick even if the bread is just touching anything." Pretty clear, huh? The price is included in the omelet, so why shouldn't my boyfriend get to enjoy what I can't if we're already paying for it anyway?
Pete (the cook/owner) badgered us pretty heavily about the issue and was raising his voice. We just stood our ground saying that we had told the waiter. Eventually Pete shoved my boyfriend (surprisingly hard for an old man) and told us we weren't worth the trouble and to get out.
Not terribly equitable treatment to those of us with special eating needs. This is by far the worst I have ever been treated in my history of eating out since my diagnosis. Just wanted to give a heads up. Never fear though, there's tons of other great (much better actually) places to have an omelet in Ann Arbor- I suggest Bell's or the Northside where they're always very nice.
Our favorite diner: Whether you're a local or just in town visiting, the absolute best diner style restaurant is Frank's on Maynard. Four generations of our family have agreed hands down that this is THE...place to enjoy a delicious tasting homestyle breakfast. We've tried most of the items on the menu, and not been disappointed with any of the selections. Our favorite is the french toast and any of the omlettes. Lunch time offers many comfort foods for specials with their meatloaf being our favorite. The club sandwiches and cheeseburgers are better than any restaurant, and with affordable prices. You can't go wrong with a meal at Frank's.
