Detroit's oldest Italian restaurant, located in what used to be known as Little Italy, a neighborhood near the Eastern Market, has survived several cycles of neighborhood blight and revival. Its tuxedo-clad wait staff and fancy traditional Italian food have remained in place as the family business has passed down through generations. Old World charm seeps through the wood paneling in the 100-year-old house. The menu is large and the place is bustling, especially on weekend evenings when reservations are a must. Veal is the specialty here, but chicken can be substituted in most dishes. Homemade pastas complement the huge array of meat and vegetarian entrees. The homemade cannoli is a popular dessert.
Good food, horrible everything else. We had a 1:00 reservation for lunch this past Thursday. There were 8 of us.We did not get seated until 1:55. What makes this worse is the entry way is so small that several of us were blocking the door while we waited for a table. This building is way to small to safely accomodate larger groups.Don't even get me started on the ridiculously small men's room. Unfortuantely we were all blocking the entrance to that while we waited as well.
Highly Disappointing: Went the other day after seeing all kinds of reviews that were positive - and I liked the ambience and the service. And the bread was pretty good - soft enough for the kids but enough texture and integrity to satisfy people who like good bread. But then it was all downhill, the pasta not only didn't resemble al dente - is was limp and soggy. The special of the day Penne Arrabiatta was atrocious. A bland tomato sauce they just poured hot sauce on with canned mushrooms which should have been outlawed in restaurants years ago. The saddest point was the frozen green beans with my entree. They are 2 blocks from Eastern market and the chef could walk over and pick out a fresh vegetable - instead they serve frozen green beans reminiscent of my middle school cafeteria. Ordered spaghetti with meatballs for the kids. Big Boy serves a better spaghetti .. and the meatballs were soft mushy and bland.
They may have better meat entree dishes, and perhaps we hit them on a bad day, but the pastas were horrible and even with good service and reasonable prices I was immensely disappointed. I have found far better Italian in Detroit, though most of it seems to be pretty expensive ... so the search continues.
