| About: | Easily the best food bargain in Detroit is this thoroughly unpretentious diner in the heart of Mexicantown. The best tamales in the state and perhaps in the entire United States are churned out here. The choice of what you can put inside the steamed corn husk of the tamales includes spiced-just-right pork or chicken, beans or even fruit. The decor has only the bare essentials, but that deficiency is counter-balanced by solicitous service and an extensive menu beyond tamales, including steak and eggs, short ribs, menudos and botanas (generous chips, cheese and vegetables platters). |

I frequent many Mexican restaurants in Southwest Detroit and have for over 30 years. This is one of the best of the best all things considered. They DO accept major credit cards now, but the place retains it's very casual family atmosphere. Nothing fancy here except the quality of the daily specials, like fajitas and carnitas for around $5. As previously stated, best tamales I've ever had. Try 'em with some pico de gallo for an authentic taste. Diana the owner refuses to change very much, after all, her recipes have been in the family for generations. The menudo and caldo de res are popular hangover remedies and rightly so, but $.99 breakfast burritos are outstanding as well. Every cop and construction worker, teacher, fireman, and all the long time neighbors know this place. I even saw the biggest restaurant owner in the whole area there one early morning ! They could do well at night but that's time to go home to the family according to Diana :). A 'must not miss' on a street with many choices, and this one may be the best...Tom
I travel from Cleveland, Ohio for the finest tamales in the country at Evie's! Keep making the best tamales and I will keep coming back.
The best Mexican place I have been to! I had a tostado, taco, burrito and enchilda and they were all the best.
