If you're curious how high I've set the bar here: My girlfriend became my fiancée here last Sunday.
I chose this place pretty much randomly as the place to propose, having never eaten here before. We are from Akron and were in town for the weekend to catch some concert action at Fisher theater, and I thought the element of surprise would be at its highest this far from home.
Let me tell ya, my girlfriend is the steak nazi, and she says the petite filet here is the best steak she's ever eaten in her life. I was equally impressed with the crab cakes and the service. Thanks Kelley and TJ, for making our night to remember flawless. Email and phone communication was beyond excellent for a restaraunt who so obviously wasn't going to gain anything special from my presence.
I only wish there were a place like this in every town.
Curse you, fat people, for giving less than 4 star reviews on behalf of portion size. The sign on the door says "small plates"... do you also write bad reviews about Sears Hardware because they don't sell software?
Small Plates rocks! The food is great, the atmosphere is the perfect combo of casual and fine dining, the service has always been great (I've have not yet been to the Royal Oak location)and the concept is fun....excellent idea for a night out w/ some close friends or an intimate dinner w/ your significant other...recommended highly!
Some friends and I checked out the new Royal Oak location a couple weeks ago and it was great! We went back 2 nights ago to see if they could reproduce the great experience for us. They did. :)
Once again our server, Katie this time, did a great job explaining the tapas concept. She pointed out that the portions are small (Small Plates, duh!) and the idea is for everyone to order two or three things, with the food being brought in courses that everyone shares. I can't get enough of this concept. I'm not a fan of picking one entree off a menu that has so many good looking options. With the tapas concept, everyone gets to try a little of everything.
Katie suggested some of the things we had tried on our first visit and a couple things we hadn't tried yet. We took her advice on the olive, cheese, and meat plate for a starter, then we split an amazing caesar salad. The scallops and the tenderloin that we tried on our first visit were just as fantastic this time. Katie's suggestion of panko-breaded shrimp and sherry mushrooms were totally winners too.
Our service was impeccable. The food was brought to us in 3 waves with great timing, our drinks were never empty, and we had some great conversation and laughs with our server. Such a fun place with such good food. Check it out, but be prepared to follow the concept. I've seen bad reviews from people that expected to order one item as an entree. This isn't your normal, boring restaurant experience. Follow your server's advice. It's worked great for us so far.
