Went there after hearing a driver on a tour I took talk about it. To me, the place was nothing special. The food was not especially tasty and the portions were marginal. I did like the chicken and rice soup I had. I thought it was very good. I had a piece of banana creme pie and didn't know it was possible to produce such a tasteless dessert. Aside from the bananas themselves, there wasn't any real flavor to it. I had a turkey dinner for my meal, and there was nothing memorable to it. Three small pieces of turkey, a scoopful of runny potatoes and another scoopful of bland dressing. Not bad, but certainly not good.
I did think, however, that the service was excellent. My waitress was both friendly and efficient. I noticed that each of the waitresses went out of their way to be very charming to all of the customers sitting nearby. They should be commended for their charm and efficiency.
I probably won't return again. There are too many other places in the area that I would like to try. Surely the area offers better food options than this.
Yahoo! lists as "Cuisine: Fast Food". Nothing fast about it.
I've stopped by several times this summer, intrigued about the 45+ minute wait for seating. My family dined there today for the first time and honestly, I cannot understand the popularity of this place.
Menu is straight from 'Old Country Buffet'--very middle-of-the-road (i.e. boring). And the claim "family restaurant" is silly because their children's menu had only three items to choose from. Service was marginal at best. We waited a full 15 minutes after being seated before the waitress came by to take our order, and dinner finally came by another 20 minutes later. Quality was fair, nothing better than you'd get at any other local diner. I had their mashed potatoes based on reviews and claims that they were spectacular, but found them no better than average.
Maybe you have to like bland food and enjoy indifferent service to rate this place at 5 stars, but there are several better choices in Mackinaw City.
Darrow's is a MUST. The food and service are superior. The Roast Pork is my favorite. The portions are GENEROUS. I look forward to vacationing in Mackinaw City in the summer. One very good reason is Darrow's. If you appreciate, I mean TRULY appreciate home cooked food, make a stop here. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED
