I personally travel to Old Mission Tavern every year when my family and I vacation in Bellaire, Michigan. We love to go wine tasting on the Peninsula, and we always try to have lunch or dinner at the Old Mission Tavern. Its one of my favorite spots. I must admit we usually get the whitefish, which is always great. I believe my daughter had the lamb when we stopped by this past year. She had no complaints.
I love the ambience of the restaurant also. The fact that is adjoined by an art gallery whose owner is often on site. Whenever we eat here, I always enjoy walking around the gallery and looking at the paintings, sculptures and other works of art for sale.
The gardens outside are also very nice to sit and reflect for a few moments. If you are ever in Traverse City or the surrounding area, Old Mission Tavern is a great place to eat and enjoy its ambience. Also if you get a chance to chat with Verna Bartnick, the owner of the gallery behind the tavern, she is a lovely woman and is a pleasure to chat with about her own art or the other artists on site.
I visit Traverse City 2 - 3 times a year for work and make sure I eat here at least once during my visit. It is simply the best restaurant in the area and the drive there makes the 20 minutes up the peninsula worth every minute. I live in the city of Chicago and travel a lot for work so I have had rack of lamb in some of the best restaurants in the U.S. and truly believe they are the best here (Mushroom sauce, I have not tried the mint). The service is friendly but not over bearing. The inside would lead you to believe the food would be more traditional and country but the sauces at The Tavern match most French infused restaurants I have visited. I cannot say enough about this place (and the prices). If there was one drawback it would be the short selection of wine. They don't expand beyond the basic names you would see in a local grocer. I would strongly encourage anyone staying in the area to dine here.
Saturday Lunch: A couple of weeks ago, I stopped in to enjoy the food and the artwork at the Old Mission Inn. They had a special "half a tuna sandwich and chili". I had to go for it. I must say, it was the best chili I had ever had. Compliments to the chef! The tuna salad sandwich was pretty darn good too.
Now that I think about it, I think I am going to go there again this weekend!
