My Mummy is originally from Ironwood, and she says that Pizza King Joe's was THE first pizza place on "The Iron Range", back in the 50s, I guess? Anyway, now it is a very quaint retro-style place...and not 'retro' as a motif, but just because it's still close to how it's always been! There are 2 juke boxes (that play 45rpm)...one old, the other REALLY old. There are booths along the wall for diners to sit in. The bar is quite small, but large enough to hang out at and have your pizza on. The liquor selection is small but adequate, and the wine selection is almost non-existant (I was slightly amused one evening when I couldn't get a glass of red wine IN AN ITALIAN PLACE!!!). The place isn't spotlessly clean, though not deplorably dirty, either. It is a place that's been in the Pizza King Joe family since the beginning(check out the COOL photo of him on the wall!); I guess it's his daughter that has it now? The bartender is usually a cheery lady that is attentive and calls you things like "honey". There are a few other menu items other than pizza; I haven't had any of those, so I can't comment. The pizza itself is not really the greatest, but it isn't terrible, either. It's a nice pizza for a nice price, and the atmosphere of the place is really what keeps me coming back. It is truly like taking a trip back in time, and I try to stop there whenever I'm in Hurley. Sure, the Bell Chalet is known for their super-duper pizza (and it IS great), but don't ignore Pizza King Joe's if you want another pizza choice. It is a charming, comfortable place. My only complaint is that they've recently changed the awning over the front door; I thought the old one was much more traditional-looking!
