My wife and I went last night and everything was just great. We walked in and were quickly seated. My wife was looking forward to their catfish, but we didn't see it on the menu. When she asked they told her that they serv it on Wednesday nights, but that she could order it anyway. That really made her night. The salads were perfect and so were our meals. I will be going back to Bears alot more often.
Great food, but like anywhere, you have to know their specialties. It is old-school as the owner has been there for maybe 40 years. The pictures of old Ankeny on the walls are neat to look at if you want a peek into history. The decanters along the ceiling are again unique.
Try the Bear Burger and tell me it isn't a great sandwich.
Of the complaints I've read:
- Children in a lounge? Try somewhere else
- Beer mug not chilled? REAL beer drinkers do not use frosted mugs, trust me, we don't
- Waiting? Duh, there is a reason you don't wait at other places, no one is eating there
- Food was Sysco products? Some are, I suppose, so don't order a common tenderloin, try a signature dish like the Mexican pizza, Bears Burger, or their daily special.
- Decor? Well, it can't be smoky in Iowa any longer and the darkness is sort of the mood. If you want bright then hit a chain restaurant, not a lounge
What is a common theme in the reviews is great food and great prices!
Yum...haven't had a bad meal there yet. I love their ranch dressing; I suppose it's just typical restaurant service ranch, but it's good. I also love the Mexican Crisp. The owner is almost always there acting as the host and he's always very friendly. It is dim and smoky, but the place is very small, and the dimness adds to the atmosphere.

The ranch dressing is Bears House dressing - it is a creamy italian and is homeade like most of the other dressings at Bears. The restaurant is now NON-SMOKING :)
