About:Not long ago, late one evening (or was it morning?), an Iowa State biology graduate (Jeff "Puff" Irvin) and Ames bar owner (Scott "Griff" Griffen) sat as many of us have dreaming over beers. This was no far-fetched fantasy. After much discussion the dream came into focus. If Puff enrolled in the master brewer's program at the University of California at Davis, Griff would have a brewpub waiting for him upon completion of his studies. The deal was sealed that night (or morning?) with a cheers and a handshake. Shortly thereafter, Puff emerged from the wilds of California with a degree, a tan and some real nerdy beer science knowledge. True to his word, Griff made good on his pledge to provide the brewpub. He purchased an old bicycle shop on Main Street in downtown Ames and immediately hired Puff as his head brewer. The dream became reality on Oct. 4, 2004, when Olde Main Brewing Company & Restaurant opened its doors to the public.

The food is wonderful and the staff is very friendly. They have a wonderful atmosphere and the food is priced what you would expect for a nice sit-down resteraunt. ($10-$20). In addition to making their own root beer, they brew their own beer as well. It is wonderful! I live in the area and go there as often as I can!

If you're a connaiseur of fine dining, you'll enjoy Olde Main.

If you're a connaiseur of great brews, you probably won't.

Olde Main has a great atmosphere and fantastic service. Every time we go there we have a good experience. The food is fantastic but pricy by Ames standards. You will normaly spend $10-20 for a good meal. I highly recommend the chicken tortellini with pesto bacon cream sauce. This is very good. The food is awesome and they have a full bar drink menu. They also recently began serving a fantastic Sunday brunch. I highly recommend it from that standpoint.

However, the beer-drinker in me has not been very impressed with the brews to this point. Given, they are a fairly new restaurant and probably haven't had enough time to consistently brew their beers the same every time. I do recommend the sampler because they do have individual beers that are really good. Try their root beer as well... it's quite nice.

Overall, Olde Main is a good experience that will probably bring return customers. I like it overall.

Great Atmosphere for Dinner for Two: If you are like me and you like to play it safe. You stick to things you know you will like then you will spend $6.95 on a hamburger with a choice of fries, soup or salad. They do not offer a huge menu and most foods are pretty pricey. $10-$20. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is very nice for a evening out without the kids. If you are big on Root Beer they brew there own and it is very good.
