LOVE SULLIVAN'S! We have a mastiff/lab mix that had some health issues due to being neglected for his 1st year of life. We rescued him from the Indianola pound and have been taking him to Sullivan's ever since. They treat you with respect and have always given us options for our dog's treatment. Dr. Tom is GREAT! We wouldn't go anywhere else.

Stay Away: I took my dog to Sullivan for 8 years. For most of that time, they were fine. Administering routine vaccinations does not require any special skill or knowledge. However, I've had two horrible experiences in the last year with them.

First, they recommended major surgery that turned out to be based on a gross misdiagnosis. I avoided it only because I got cold feet and decided to go to ISU for a second opinion. The surgery Sullivan would have performed would have been completely unnecessary and would not have solved the real problem. They proposed to remove a soft tissue structure on the roof of the dog's mouth which ISU advised me was completely natural. What the dog actually needed was some work on her teeth.

I vowed not to go back after that, but vaccination deadlines were up and I didn't want to take the time to find a new vet just yet, so I relented. While we were there they asked if there were any other issues with the dog. I told them that a growth on my dog's face that they previously told me was a harmless sebacious cyst had gotten a little bigger. The vet took a look at it and said it isn't a sebacious cyst, it could be cancerous and I should consider having it removed and biopsied, for which they gave me an estimate of about $500. When I asked for more informaiton about what this growth could be or what the consequences might be, I got a sharp response and very little information, which a suspect may be reflect some indignation from my decision to take the dog to ISU earlier.

That's it for me. I'm not a difficult customer. I stuck with them for 8 years. What I've experinced in the last year has been incompetence, plain and simple.
